Having daily luggage shuttle to bring your bags between accommodations booked through KUMANO TRAVEL while walking the Kumano Kodo can be very convenient, letting you walk hands-free with just a day pack to let you focus on the trail, the sights, and the experience.

It is available from accommodation to accommodation, except for Kii-Tanabe station and Takijiri options, between accommodations booked through KUMANO TRAVEL, and at least 20 days in advance.

Once you have selected your accommodations, you can then make your select daily luggage requests through KUMANO TRAVEL.

About Reservations

Luggage shuttles need to be booked at least 20 days in advance.
Online booking for luggage shuttle service is only available if accommodations are booked via KUMANO TRAVEL.
Designated meeting times cannot be changed last minute, so select a time when you know you can meet the service provider.

Luggage Tags and Conditions

Put everything inside your bag and do not attach anything to the outside such as an umbrella or plastic bags or other bags.
Additional fees may be charged or denial of pickup of luggages if conditions not satisfied.
Service providers will likely attach delivery tags to your luggage. Please do not remove them throughout your journey in the area.

Regarding Daily Shuttle after Arriving in Tanabe

Daily luggage is not possible last minute upon your arrival in Tanabe. Please try to book it when you book your accommodations.

For safety reasons and to mitigate onsite problems, the local shuttle suppliers require luggage shuttle only be arranged between accommodations booked through KUMANO TRAVEL.

Next-day or Later Shipping Options

If same-day delivery is not needed, there are a few options to send bags forward, and they can even be booked last-minute onsite.

Yamato Transport and Yu-Pack through Japan Post are two companies that can ship luggage all over the country. Their services are efficient, secure, world-class, and reasonably priced, and do not need to be booked in advance.

Ways next-day or later shipping can be used:

SHIP luggage from the beginning of your walk to the last accommodation in the Kumano area, or next accommodation after Kumano (like Osaka hotel, etc.)
SHIP luggage to an accommodation partway along your journey (in Hongu, for example) that accepts next-day luggage (and can assist you with shipping it as well), and then again to the last accommodation at the end.

Yamato Transport (Kuroneko)

● This service is often called TA-Q-BIN
● Delivers all over Japan
● Distinctive logo of a black cat with kitten in its mouth inside a yellow oval
● Can be arranged at major hotels, convenience stores, airports, and other designated establishments.
● It is advisable to set the same delivery date and time as when you plan to check in.

NOTE: Only cash is accepted for this service at most places.

Pay on delivery

The person receiving the luggage pays upon delivery.
Be sure your booked accommodation can receive the luggage. (Also, it is nice to let them know to expect it.)
Major hotels can manage “pay on delivery,” but often charge a handling fee to the guests when they hand over the luggage.

When Shipping One Bag

Filling out the waybill (or shipping form) for Yamato TA-Q-BIN is fairly straightforward.
Using English is acceptable.

When Shipping Two Bags or More

Fill out this waybill like the single bag shipping form.
The multiple baggage waybill can be used when shipping 2 to 5 bags. The first two bags are included on this form, but if you are sending 3 to 5 bags, additional delivery slips are required.

Luggage Storage

TANABE Tourist Information Center

For those who do not need a luggage shuttle each day, luggage storage is available next to the JR Kii-Tanabe train station at the TANABE Tourist Information Center.

Hours: Every day between 9:00 and 18:00
Price: 500 yen per bag, per day, including the day the bags are dropped off.

Advance reservation is not required.

Outside of the center’s hours, coin lockers at JR Kii-Tanabe Station are an option, but bags are only kept in the locker for 3 days, including the day they were dropped off. Bags can be held up to one month at the center.

MyAsa

About a minute’s walk from Kii-Tanabe Station is MyAsa Breakfast and Cafe which also offers a luggage storage service.

Hours: 4:00 to 20:00
Closed: Wednesdays
Price: 700 yen for up to 2 bags (even 1 bag is 700), 500 yen per bag after that.

Miyoshiya Ryokan

Miyoshiya Ryokan is a few minutes’ walk from Kii-Tanabe Station and offers a luggage storage option, even for non-staying guests.

Coin Lockers

Coin Locker Overview

Many locations throughout the region have coin lockers, especially the train stations. Storing your luggage is a convenient option, letting you freely visit the area.

Coin lockers are usually based on a day rate, 24 hours from 12 midnight to 12 midnight. If you leave luggage in the locker for more than one day, another day’s rate is needed to remove your baggage. Most coin lockers can be used for up to 3 days. Leaving them in their for longer means they will probably be taken to a separate storage facility for unclaimed items.

Locker dimensions vary, but are usually available in small, medium, and large sizes.

Put baggage inside.
Insert 100 yen coins to pay.
Close locker door and turn key.
Take key with you.
To retrieve luggage insert key and open door.
