Caravan is a popular, recently re-opened, retro Japanese “kissaten 喫茶店” restaurant not far from Kii-Tanabe Station with an English menu available featuring traditional fare like Japanese curry and rice and “omuraisu オムライス” or rice omelet. The owner, Mr. Hirakawa, has wandered–originally from Miyazaki prefecture, then Kobe, and now in Wakayama–and the name “Caravan” refers to his “wandering” to get here. The restaurant is resplendent with nostalgic movie posters and even a cache of old games from years gone by. Either a Western-style movie is playing or classic rock and pop vinyl is played at lunchtime. With a little time to relax, Caravan is a cool, tasty lunch option.
