Ah, summer in Japan! Soaking in rivers and the ocean, eating kakigori かき氷 flavored shaved ice, and spotting all sorts of beetles and creatures in nature can be fun, not to mention the deep green landscape.
However, Japanese summers are known for their stifling heat and humidity with news sources recently forecasting high temperatures from 30-40 degrees Celsius (86-104 degrees Fahrenheit).

Tips for Heat Exhaustion Prevention
If you are hiking the Kumano Kodo from June and September, take steps to prevent heat exhaustion:
● Begin your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
● Bring plenty of water and drink lots of fluids.
● Cover up with a hat and sunscreen.
● Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing
● Take adequate breaks, and seek shaded cover if you get overheated.
● Use local bus transportation to modify exposure time on the trail and make sections more manageable in the heat.

Other Summer Tips

★ Bring extra clothes (socks, t-shirt) to change into when sweaty
★ Bring your swimsuits!
★ Soft cream ice cream … mmm.
HINT: Fill up your water bottles at your accommodation before departure.
It is tempting to walk in shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, and sandals, but it is best to wear lightweight pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy walking shoes, as the hot weather brings out a variety of biting insects.
