1,000 多年來，包括退位天皇和貴族在內的社會各界人士，都不畏艱苦的前來熊野參拜。參拜路線網絡便由這些參拜者一步一腳印走出來，現在被稱為「熊野古道」。它橫跨了多山的紀伊半島，遊客常到的小路和古老的鵝卵石路交錯穿梭於偏遠的村莊和森林中。
