Depuis plus d’un millénaire, des japonais de toute classe sociale, incluant des aristocrates et d’anciens empereurs, ont fait le rude pèlerinage sacré jusqu’à Kumano. Ces pèlerins utilisaient un réseau de chemins, maintenant appelés Kumano Kodo, s’étendant à travers la péninsule montagneuse de Kii. Ces chemins étaient souvent pavés et passaient par des villages isolés et des forêts offrant une grande diversité de paysages.
